Shari Kiln Coffee Cup & Saucer This was given to me by an acquaintance several decades ago. It has been stored in a cabinet without being used. It's a lovely piece that gives a contrast between softness and hardness. I think it's in beautiful condition with no scratches, but please check the photos carefully. ● Shari Kiln Shari is located at the western base of the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido, facing the Sea of Okhotsk. There, at the northeasternmost point in Japan, is the Noborigama kiln, Shari Kiln. Shari Kiln was established in 1983 with the belief of "living by firing Hokkaido clay with Hokkaido firewood." The first kiln owner, Tsugio Nakamura, developed the "Ezo Yakishime" method in 2004. It is fired only in a snake kiln (jagama). No glaze is applied. While general pottery often uses "straw" glaze, Shari Kiln uses "igusa" (rush) glaze. This was a unique innovation for a land where rice cannot be grown. Around the Noborigama kiln, stacks of tatami mats made from igusa are piled up. The vessels made with Shiretoko red clay and igusa glaze create a deep green flavor.
