This item was purchased in Shenzhen, China 30 years ago, shortly after Deng Xiaoping designated Shenzhen as a Special Economic Zone as part of his reform and opening-up policy. I remember spending about an hour negotiating the price with the shop owner, and I ended up making him angry. The bird and flower motifs on the body are standard cloisonné, but the entire body has a raised design about 1mm thick. (The entire body is not a smooth, flat surface, but rather a three-dimensional carving.)
