■ I sing as my heart dictates - the prematurely deceased haiku poet, Kenshin Sumitaku. His short life, entirely dedicated to haiku, now quietly resonates with the present day. Born in Okayama, the haiku poet Kenshin Sumitaku passed away at the young age of 25. His life and the life of a middle school student suffering from bullying, who encounters his poems, intersect across time. ■ As free-form haiku gains renewed attention, this moving story has spread by word of mouth from Okayama, the setting of the story, to theaters nationwide. ■ Ayako Paryus (under the name Ayako Yamaguchi), who won the 14th Novel Gendai Long Novel Newcomer Award this year for her first novel, "Neighbor X," wrote the screenplay. Story In 2017, Akihiko Kobori was being bullied in middle school. The vice principal, Morooka, finds Akihiko locked in a cleaning supply closet. He begins to tell the story of Harumi Sumitaku, a student he was once involved with, who wrote the note "Plans are not fixed, but undecided," which was found in the classroom. Around 1980, Morooka was introduced to Harumi Sumitaku at a cafeteria where she worked, and they met again in a shopping district. He tells of how Harumi was ordained and took the Buddhist name "Kenshin" and built a Buddhist altar called "Muryojuan." And how she died at the young age of 25. Kobori begins to read Kenshin Sumitaku's collection of haiku, "Unfinished," which he borrowed from Morooka, and gradually becomes absorbed in the haiku and Kenshin Sumitaku's life. In 1984, 22-year-old Kenshin Sumitaku was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. While supported by the devoted care of his family, he immersed himself in writing haiku. However, his condition worsened, and he passed away in 1987 at the young age of 25, clutching the manuscript of his collection "Unfinished."
