This Jotoshu was made in Showa 4 and was created to commemorate the completion of the roof frame of a new building. Jotoshu were scattered in the four directions of the house during the roof-raising ceremony and were used as lucky charms to pray for the prosperity and safety of the building. The roof-raising ceremony itself is a traditional ritual performed when the framework of the house, such as the pillars and beams, is completed, and the munagi (ridgepole), the highest part of the roof, is raised.
