He incorporated diverse painting styles and had a significant influence on the Japanese art world of later generations. ◆ Biography Born: 1763 (Hōreki 13) Birthplace: Edo (present-day Tokyo) Father: Tani Rokoku, an official in the shogunate. Bunchō also served the shogunate in his youth. He was familiar with painting from a young age and studied Chinese painting and traditional Japanese painting extensively. While particularly interested in Nanga (literati painting), he also absorbed the techniques of the Kanō school, the Maruyama-Shijō school, Ukiyo-e, and Western painting. ◆ Painting Style and Achievements Tani Bunchō established literati painting that fused realism and intellect and nurtured many disciples. His subjects were diverse, including landscapes, flowers and birds, figures, and customs, and sketches from his travels were also incorporated into his works.
