Iwate Prefecture's Kuji City, Chiba Prefecture's Choshi City, and Fukushima Prefecture's Iwaki City are the three major production areas, with Kuji being the most famous, but Choshi is also a valuable production area. Furthermore, it is estimated that during the Kofun period, from the late 6th century to the 7th century, a trade route (Amber Route) existed, transporting amber from Kuji to Nara and from Choshi to Nara. Choshi amber is the oldest in Japan, dating back 110 million to 90 million years ago (Kuji amber is newer, dating back 89 million to 83 million years ago).
