His original name was Wu Jun, and his courtesy name was Changshuo, also known as Xiangpu and Qian'an. He was from Anji County, Zhejiang Province. Wu Changshuo was deeply devoted to epigraphy (the study of bronzes and stone inscriptions), and he established his own unique style of calligraphy, painting, and seal carving based on it. His calligraphy is powerful and weighty, characterized by a unique brushstroke that blends seal script and clerical script. In painting, he received high praise, especially for his flower-and-bird paintings (particularly plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, pomegranates, and pumpkins), and is known for his free and unrestrained brushwork and rich colors. In seal carving, while inheriting the traditions of Ding Jing and Deng Shiru of the Qing dynasty, he developed a more powerful and original style, establishing a school known as the "Wu school." In addition, Wu Changshuo also served as the first president of the Xiling Seal Society and had a great influence on the modern Chinese seal study and calligraphy and painting circles.
