The Brabham BT46 was introduced from the third race of the 1978 season, the South African Grand Prix, where Lauda took pole position in its debut race. Cars No. 4 and No. 6 were converted to the BT46B, which debuted with a win at the eighth race, the Swedish Grand Prix, but was subsequently banned. The BT46 was reintroduced from the ninth race, the French Grand Prix, after being introduced from the third race, the South African Grand Prix, in 1978. John Watson took pole position at the ninth race, the French Grand Prix, and at the 14th race, the Italian Grand Prix, Mario Andretti (Lotus) and Gilles Villeneuve (Ferrari) on the front row of the qualifying grid received a one-minute penalty for a jump start, and Lauda and Watson finished one-two, with a 1.5-second gap. Watson finished second in the Italian Grand Prix but ended the year without a win, finishing sixth in the rankings.
