When you think of Blue Onion, Meissen or Carlsbad usually come to mind, but there's also a Japanese version. I suspect they were made to resemble the European ones and exported. This item is indistinguishable from Meissen, but it was likely much cheaper. In the past, Meissen painters supposedly drew pomegranates, but since pomegranates weren't well-known at the time, they mistook them for onions, hence the name. Searching reveals that Maruta Seitosho was a manufacturer in Japan, and there are records of Tachikichi also producing them. The pattern is very similar to Blue Danube, also considered to be of Japanese origin. Maruta Seitosho doesn't appear in searches anymore. This item also seems to be rare and difficult to obtain nowadays. It's approximately 23.5cm in diameter and 2.5cm high. There are some minor scratches from stacking, visible when held up to the light.
