As is often the case with items of this nature, the original box inscription reads "Bizen." However, it is likely a Nanban ware from the 17th to 19th centuries, meaning a type of unglazed stoneware from the Philippines or similar regions. It's made of a dense clay and fired at high temperatures. I've kept this as a favorite of mine for many years, but I'm now putting it up for sale. The white water stains visible on the inside are evidence that it was actually used. I imagine it was used to display camellia flowers, and perhaps displayed in a tokonoma alcove. It has a slightly angled spout, which is also a characteristic of this type of ware. Diameter: Approximately 19.8cm Height: Approximately 5.8cm Sizes are approximate.
