Yaotomi Shrine is a shrine located in Takeshima-cho, Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture. Also known as Takeshima Benten, it is one of the Seven Benten Shrines of Japan. It is located on Takeshima Island in Mikawa Bay, off the coast of Gamagori City. The entire area of Takeshima Island is the precinct of Yaotomi Shrine. It is only 400m away from the opposite shore, and the vegetation is warm-temperate, greatly differing from the flora on the opposite shore. It is located in the center of Takeshima Island and is connected by the 387m Takeshima Bridge. This Takeshima Bridge is also called the "Enmusubi Bridge" (matchmaking bridge), and there are rules for crossing it. When couples, such as lovers or married couples, cross it, they must "hold hands tightly with their partner and stick together while crossing" and "not look back until they have crossed." Along with Enoshima, Chikubushima, and Itsukushima, it is one of the Seven Benten Shrines of Japan, and enshrines the gods of good luck, safe childbirth, and matchmaking. The main hall has "Fukushu-sen" (fortune seeds money), which is said to accumulate money, and using this is said to bring back good fortune and connections. Within the grounds, Uga Shrine (business prosperity), Daikoku Shrine (business prosperity), Chitose Shrine (longevity and studies), and Hachidai Ryujin Shrine (family safety, marital harmony, and warding off evil) each enshrine four deities, and it is said that if you visit all five shrines, a lot of happiness will come at once. Hachidai Ryujin Shrine is located deeper within Yaotomi Shrine. The enshrined deity is Toyotamahiko-no-Mikoto, the god of the sea. According to the "Ryujin Ryakuenki" (Brief History of the Dragon God), in a dream of Fujiwara no Toshinari, there was a divine revelation: "If you build a shrine on this island and enshrine me, I will protect you forever." When a rope was lowered into the sea, the sacred body of the dragon god appeared. From this, it is revered as a god with remarkable spiritual efficacy, including rainmaking. By the way, Hachidai Ryujin refers to the Eight Great Dragon Kings: Nanda, Upananda, Sagara, Vasuki, Takshaka, Anavatapta, Manasvin, and Utpala.
