He was raised by devout parents and became a wise and virtuous person. When his parents died, he inherited a large fortune, but Nicholas decided to use it for the poor. When he was a priest, he secretly threw a large sum of money through the window (or chimney) three times at night into the house of a merchant who had been wealthy but had lost his fortune and was forced to sell his daughters into prostitution. Thanks to this, the daughters were able to get married properly, and it is known that he saved their lives. There is also a legend that he calmed a storm and resurrected a sailor who had fallen from a ship and died when he went to Jerusalem by sea to make a pilgrimage to the Lord's tomb. Many stories of St. Nicholas helping the weak and guiding those with weak faith to uphold the truth remain. Especially when helping the weak, he did so without letting others know. After his pilgrimage, Nicholas became a monk and then a bishop in the town of Myra in Lycia. During the persecution of Christians by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, he was imprisoned with the believers, but he was released in 313 AD when Emperor Constantine issued an edict of religious freedom. From the 12th century, in Europe, especially Switzerland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, December 6th, the feast day of St. Nicholas, became a holiday for children, and based on the story of the three daughters whom Nicholas had helped, the custom of secretly giving presents to children on the eve of the saint's feast day began. After that, it was changed to the form of an old man wearing a red hood and clothes, the color of the bishop's robes, carrying a bag of gifts on his back, and it became associated with Christmas, and his name was also called "Santa Claus" in a Dutch accent.
