The scabbard is made of soft leather. The hilt cover is not leather, but may be cotton. There is some slight wear on the edges, but it seems to be in relatively good condition. It belonged to the head of a large merchant house in Mito. Perhaps it was a roadside item for a pilgrimage to Ise Shrine. It was owned by someone who received a bride from the Mito domain and was a goshi (country samurai) of the Mito domain. The total length of the scabbard is 57 cm.
