1812 Wang Yamei (also known as Ou Yamei) had the given name Yin and the courtesy name Yamei. He was from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, and later moved to Shanghai. He was the younger brother of the renowned painter Wang Jingfu. He was one of the leading artists of the late Qing dynasty, active from around 1832 to 1892. He was proficient in a wide range of genres, including figure painting, landscape painting, depictions of trees and stones, birds and fish, and orchids and bamboo. He is particularly highly regarded for his depictions of "slender plum blossoms (yaseume)." He is considered to be on par with Hu Tiemei, who was known for his plum blossom paintings during the same period. He also authored works discussing the art of plum blossoms, including "Meipu" (Plum Blossom Manual), "Meishipu" (Plum Stone Manual), and "Lanzhupu" (Orchid and Bamboo Manual). After moving from Nanjing to Shanghai, he made his living through painting and is known as one of the important painters representing the "Shanghai School (Kaijoha)." In particular, he established his own unique aesthetic in the expression of plum blossoms, and through his "Meipu" series, he demonstrated deep research and expressive power regarding the form and elegance of plum blossoms.
