Purchased over 25 years ago from an antique shop in Paris, France. This is a set of two very old and hard-to-find, lovely ceramic canisters. They are labeled "Sucre" (sugar) and "Cafe" (coffee). These are Valbotine canisters with a very cute relief of three small pink roses. The smooth curves and pink gradation are very elegant. They are all hand-painted with a vivid pink gradient. They do not have lids. These are very popular canisters, and especially this pink rose Valbotine is one of the most difficult canisters to find in France, and you rarely see them even in Paris now. Valbotine is a general term in French for soft pottery with a three-dimensional design, like an embossment, meaning "bumpy." It was particularly popular in France and other parts of Europe during the Art Nouveau period from the late 19th to the early 20th century. They are made of soft clay and are easily broken, and almost all have crazing and stains in the crazing. The only markings are numbers, but they are undoubtedly from a prestigious French kiln such as Saint-Clément or Lunéville, dating from around the early 1900s. They are old, but they have a glossy appearance and a very attractive aura. Ceramic canisters are more fragile than enamel, so very old ones are becoming quite rare in France. Especially canisters with such popular designs are very expensive in France. They have an antique yet cute appearance, and this rose series is truly wonderful and captivates people's eyes. They would look lovely wherever they are placed. They can also be used practically to store various small items, and can be used separately. Since they don't have lids, they might be easier to use, such as as pen stands. They might look very chic and cute when displayed in a cabinet or used as a small item holder in a room. The condition is as it was when purchased. There are stains, dirt, scratches, abrasions, and crazing, but they are glossy for their age and are in good condition without any noticeable cracks or chips. They are a rare find.
