It's a series name that rationalized various clothing items for U.S. soldiers, such as flight jackets, undershirts, and women's trousers, with integrated specifications. This item was originally developed as underwear (U) and was not a dedicated jacket, but CWU-7/P and 8/P were favored by ground crew, and 9/P was often used as their liner. Around the mid-70s, the specifications were revised, and the C type appeared. The sewing changed from the straight "diamond" shape of types A and B to onion quilting. The name also changed to "LINERS, FLYER'S," and the category changed to liner (L). The difference between the early numbers and those after is that the purpose of use is completely different. Also, the model number notation disappeared from type D onwards. This type A item is rare and hard to find.
