You get a glass filled with sake poured from a 1.8-liter bottle until it overflows into a wooden square masu. This is a common sight at izakaya (Japanese pubs) and is called "mokkiri." When the sake in the glass is gone, you pour the remaining sake from the masu into the glass to drink. Just the glass feels a bit plain... but drinking directly from the masu, while atmospheric, is a bit difficult... and so the "mokkiri" style was created.
