Pilgrimage to these sacred sites, using them as temples for collecting stamps, is the oldest pilgrimage in Japan, and is still visited by many worshipers today. "Thirty-three" comes from the belief that Kannon Bodhisattva transforms into 33 different forms when saving sentient beings, as described in the "Myoho Renge-kyo Kanzeon Bosatsu Fumonbon Dai-nijugo" (Kan'on-kyo, or the Lotus Sutra, Chapter 25).
