This is the Kishu Hina doll, a traditional local doll from Wakayama Prefecture. These dolls are made using the techniques of Kishu lacquerware and are one of Wakayama's representative crafts. Woodworkers carve the dolls from Japanese snowbell trees, then lacquerers apply the base coat and top coat with genuine lacquer. Finally, painters add layers of color to complete them. Thanks to the careful work of the artisans, it is said that the dolls will not fade for decades, and their luster and flavor will increase over time. This one was found in a closet.
