Scapolite is the group name for minerals that include two types: meionite (mizzonite) and marialite. Cat's eye scapolite is formed when meionite, which contains calcium, and marialite, which contains sodium, are mixed together to form a single mineral. It is found in apatite veins in gabbro and in sedimentary rocks penetrated by granite, and is often found as columnar crystals belonging to the tetragonal system, but can also be found in massive, granular, and cleavage forms. It is mostly colorless or white, but can also be gray or yellow, and rarely purple. The name comes from the Greek word "skapos," meaning shaft, because the crystals of this mineral are square pillars. Cat's eye scapolite is a variety of scapolite that contains parallel rod-shaped cavities (large gaps due to liquid or tube inclusions), and when cut en cabochon, a beautiful cat's eye appears.
