This is a work by Bizen-yaki artist Yoichi Matsui, a holder of Okayama Prefecture's Important Intangible Cultural Property. Born in Kumamoto Prefecture, he was invited by the governor in 1960 to Bizen, where he took up a position at the current Bizen Center. He later became independent in 1973, creating flower vases, tea utensils, and other works. This piece is from before he became a holder of the prefecture's Important Intangible Cultural Property. The kiln transformation, "bota" (a type of glaze), ash-covered appearance, "kirikomi" (carving technique), and the two ears of the flower vase are all wonderfully powerful, no matter where you look. I don't think you often see works of this caliber. This piece is from the collection of my antique teacher. It was in a fire, and the box was unfortunately damaged by water, leaving stains... but the artwork itself miraculously survived intact. The box is currently stained, so I have marked it as "with stains." The size of the exhibited work is approximately 25.3 cm in height, 24 cm in width, and the diameter of the mouth is about 10.2 cm. The price of the artist's works is high. This piece seems to be something my antique teacher purchased a long time ago. He lamented that he had been robbed of many items, such as the sake bottles and "guinomi" (sake cups) of famous artists like Mr. Yu Fujiwara, and expensive flower vases, which were in their original boxes and displayed on shelves at home and outside.
