Born in 1914 in Imbe, Bizen City. He entered the world of pottery under the tutelage of Shunkou Nishimura. In 1935, he became a student of Seibo Kitamura, a member of the Japan Art Academy, and studied sculpture. He also studied wood carving with Shin Naito and drawing with Saburo Okada and Sakujiro Okubo.
