1980: Pilot cable installation scene, Naruto Mountain to Awaji Island The Great Naruto Bridge (Ōnaruto Bridge) is a suspension bridge connecting the narrowest part of the Naruto Strait between Fukura-hei, Minamiawaji City, Hyogo Prefecture (Kadosaki, Awaji Island) and Tosadomariura, Naruto Town, Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture (Omoshima, Magosaki). It opened on June 8, 1985 (Showa 60). The bridge length is 1,629 meters, the central span is 876 meters, the width is 25 meters, and the height of the main tower is 144.3 meters. To avoid affecting the whirlpools of the Naruto Strait, a special construction method called the multi-column foundation method is used [2]. The bridge has two levels, with a three-lane road on each side on the upper level (currently using four central lanes out of six total), and a structure on the lower level that can accommodate a railway (Shikoku Shinkansen) in the future. However, since the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge was built as a road-only bridge, separate tunnel construction or bridging, such as the Kitan Strait Tunnel, will be required for railway development from Awaji Island to Honshu.
