In 1932, Charles Danner started making sturdy work boots with five workers in Chippewa Falls, selling them for $4 a pair. Charles Danner expanded his business in Portland, Oregon. At the time, he began making high-quality chalk loggers and selling them for $20 a pair. In 1959, he developed the first climbing boots in America using Vibram soles, and Danner's Mountain Trail was featured in Backpacker magazine as the easiest boot to climb in, making Danner a premium brand in the hiking industry. In 1979, through a joint development with Gore-Tex, he succeeded in being the first in the world to adopt Gore-Tex, a waterproof and breathable material that was considered difficult to use in shoes. The shoes were named Danner Light, and are now synonymous with completely waterproof boots. Since its founding, the concept has been "to make shoes that are easy to use and durable, without causing inconvenience to the people who actually wear Danner shoes." This model uses a side gore, similar to the Mountain Light upper, for easy on and off, and the Vibram Evaflex sole, which is characterized by its lightness and cushioning, for comfort.
