Since they are 100-yen store scratching posts, you can replace them frequently. There is also a smaller case that holds one. The material is compressed cedar from Gifu Prefecture. There may be a slight smell at first. If you are concerned about the smell, you can buy paint at a home center and apply it to eliminate it. Over time, the color will gradually deepen. The edges are also chamfered, so you won't cut your hands on the corners. It is not painted so that cats can lick it safely. We have these scratching posts all over our house, so our cats can scratch to their heart's content. Perhaps because of this, they don't scratch the walls or tatami mats at all.
