This is a stunningly beautiful piece of Sanuki-bori, a traditional craft from Kagawa Prefecture, believed to have been made in the early Showa era. This tray, known as a Sanuki Bon, is handcrafted from a single piece of wood, painstakingly carved out. The surface features unique chisel marks, each different, giving the piece a deeply rich and expressive character. Being a nearly square tray (Shihō-bon), it can be used in various ways, such as an individual placemat or small dining tray, or as a serving tray. The chisel marks on the surface are not too deep, so dishes placed on it won't wobble, and in fact, are said to provide a sense of stability.
