This bag was purchased by my mother about 20 years ago and is made of genuine camel leather. It doesn't seem to have been used much, but there are a few scratches, as if from fingernails, on the part that opens and closes. The flap covers them, so they're barely noticeable, but please be aware of this. The leather is firm and sturdy, but not that heavy, and the wide gusset provides more storage capacity than it looks (in my personal opinion).
