Shogawa Hikimono Kiji is a traditional craft mainly produced in Takaoka City, Tonami City, and Nanto City in Toyama Prefecture. Hikimono refers to products such as bowls and trays that are made by turning wood on a potter's wheel. The appeal of Shogawa Hikimono Kiji is, above all, the beauty of its wood grain. Because the raw wood is processed horizontally, the wood grain differs even in the wood cut from the same tree. By craftsmen hand-turning it, it becomes a unique and warm Hikimono Kiji. Shogawa Hikimono Kiji is divided into "Shiraki-ji" (plain wood) that has been polished and those that have been "wiped with lacquer." Especially, Shiraki-ji products are popular as a distinctive product among Shogawa Hikimono Kiji. General wood products are painted with lacquer or other coatings to become products. On the other hand, Shiraki-ji products are only carefully polished and do not apply any lacquer. Therefore, the color and luster of the wood change by being exposed to the air. Shiraki-ji, which has just been completed, has the original color of the wood, but after about 5 years of use, it will change to a luxurious dark brown color as if it has been lacquered.
