This is a product called a "muff" or "care muff."
I am a healthcare worker, and after learning about them, I thought they were wonderful, so I started making them.
Muffs have spread in Japan, inspired by dementia care in the UK.
While they are often associated with dementia,
they can be used in various situations to soothe restless states,
such as instead of using mitt restraints to prevent the removal of IV lines.
By putting the hand and arm into the muff's tube,
it is expected to provide warmth to the hands, promoting mental calmness, relaxation of the nervous system, blood flow, circulation, muscle tension relief, and autonomic nerve recovery.
Also, inside the muff, there is a "niginigi" (squeeze toy) that can be squeezed, and it is expected to activate the brain by moving the fingers in a relaxed state.
There are safety rules in the construction to prevent injuries to people with dementia or the elderly with thin skin from the muff, and to prevent them from eating the decorations.
Based on literature and experience, we have focused on safety, of course,
and we use acrylic yarn and try to use as little cotton as possible, paying attention to ease of washing.
Personally, I think it's also good for keeping the hands of people who use wheelchairs or who have paralyzed hands warm (^^)
