A hand-carved shogi piece set with a Showa era feel. The bottom of the Gyokusho (King) piece is marked "Tenjo Saku," and the careful carving and lustrous lacquer finish are impressive. The piece box has the mark "Fuku" (Good Fortune) and a label that reads "Goshogi Koma" (Shogi Pieces), suggesting it is a work from a workshop in Tendo, Yamagata Prefecture. The font is a powerful and beautiful Kinki-style. The carving is a horiume (carved and filled) finish, with black lacquer filling the characters, giving off an elegant sheen depending on the angle of the light. It has a vintage feel and is recommended for both collection and practical use.
