Tsuyazaki Gion Yamakasa is a festival that began 301 years ago, in the Edo period, in 1714. It started when the gods of Gion Shrine were invited from Kushida Shrine (Hakata) to Namiore Shrine (Tsuyazaki), and three Yamakasa floats were dedicated to pray for the eradication of epidemics and disasters. There are three streams of Yamakasa: the Kitanagare, centered on the fishing industry; the Shinmachinagare, centered on commerce; and the Okanagare, centered on agriculture. The main event of the Yamakasa, the Oiyama (chase), used to be held on July 19th, but now it is held on a Sunday close to the 19th. In 2015, it was held on July 19th. The day before, a Hadaka Mairi (naked pilgrimage) is held to pray for the safety of the day. Parishioners wearing only loincloths run a 7-kilometer course to visit three shrines.
