This special issue focuses on Herb Lubalin (1918-1981), a designer known as a representative of "American Typography," the free and open-minded, text-centered design that flourished mainly on the East Coast of the United States from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s. Lubalin's art direction for the magazines "Eros," "Fact," and "Avant Garde" became milestones in 20th-century American editorial design. This issue explores the appeal of Herb Lubalin's typography, showcasing his multifaceted talent, from the creation of the groundbreaking typeface Avant Garde, to his editorial work, including the editing and design of the tabloid-sized promotional magazine "U&lc," as well as posters, logotypes, and typeface design.
