Offering from my collection. This is a single-legged, double-headed earth goddess statue from the Robi Wala people of Ghana. I purchased it from a specialty shop that deals in African ritual objects. The Robi Wala are a sub-group of the Robi people who live in Burkina Faso. They haven't been extensively studied academically, and they remain a mysterious tribe. They are named "Robi Wala" after their language, "Robi," and the area they live in, "Wala." As the name suggests, the Robi and Robi Wala share many similarities in language, area, history, and culture. While it's impossible to pinpoint the exact lineage of beliefs associated with this statue, the emphasized breasts and the curvaceous form, which resembles a skirt, suggest it is a goddess statue related to earth goddess worship. As you can see, the face is bifurcated, and cowrie shells are embedded in the eye sockets. (The cowrie shell on the left face is missing one.) Also, a material like kaolin is applied to the surface, and traces of its use in rituals are clearly visible. → Cowrie shells are symbols of abundance and a bountiful harvest in Africa and New Guinea, and are often used in charms to pray for a good harvest. While I cannot definitively say why it has two heads, it may represent a belief in twins or hermaphroditism. The Yoruba people of Nigeria, for example, have a strong belief in twins, so perhaps the faith was transmitted through inter-tribal exchange. It is truly a mysterious and unusual goddess statue. Size: Height approx. 50.0cm, Width 10.5 cm x Thickness 8.0 cm (including stand) Due to the large size of the item, it will take some time to ship. Shipping will be via Kuroneko Yamato (cash on delivery), so please understand. As it is a very old item, there is deterioration and damage due to age. Please examine the photos carefully and purchase with the understanding that there will be no claims or returns.
