The "Shanshan Umbrella" used in the "Tottori Shanshan Festival" is a smaller version of the umbrella used in the traditional performing art "Inaba Umbrella Dance" in eastern Tottori Prefecture, from which it originated. It is designed so that anyone can dance with it. It is made by stretching Japanese paper over a bamboo frame and is painted in red and blue, decorated with gold and silver strips. A bell is attached in the middle of the frame, and the sound of the bell "shanshan" echoes at key points in the dance.
