Blessed with stunning proportions and a decent voice, Imbruglia, an Australian TV actress, and producer Phil Thornalley transformed Ednaswap's gritty "Torn" into a syrupy pop confection. As Imbruglia's debut, it couldn't have been a better fit. After all, the album "Left of the Middle" is more middle-of-the-road than the title suggests. Imbruglia manages various styles of female vocals—anger ("One More Addiction"), electronica ("Big Mistake"), longing ("Smoke")—but there's nothing particularly distinctive about any of the songs.
