Shisa: Okinawa's guardian deities that ward off evil spirits and disasters. Shisa are lion-like creatures placed at the entrance of a house or on the roof, and are traditional guardian deities of Okinawa, believed to protect against misfortune and evil spirits. The one with its mouth open is male, and the one with its mouth closed is female. The male is said to ward off evil spirits and bring in good fortune, while the female is said to prevent the good fortune from escaping.
