This is a wooden carving of a Rice Paddy God (Ta no Kami). It originates from Kagoshima, where many stone Rice Paddy Gods remain. While the exact age is unknown, it appears to be from the Edo period. As this is not a field I usually deal with, I don't have much knowledge, but I was simply overwhelmed and decided to acquire it. Some white areas, possibly gesso, remain, suggesting it may have originally been colored. I believe it was enshrined in a small shrine or kept in a private residence, rather than outdoors. (Rice Paddy Gods are still often privately owned.) As you can see in the images, there are cracks and chips. There is also some insect damage. Height: Approximately 49.5cm Sizes are approximate. The actual item may differ slightly in color from the images. Being an old item, there are age-related scratches, marks, and dirt.
