Accompanying the first US solo exhibition of Swiss-Guinean artist Namsa Leuba (born 1982), "Crossed Looks" showcases Leuba's major projects to date, including photo series from Guinea, South Africa, Nigeria, and Benin, as well as the debut of a new series taken recently in Tahiti. It examines how African identity and other cultural expressions are explored in the Western imagination. Inspired by West African visual culture and rituals, contemporary fashion and design, and the history of photography and its colonial gaze, the over 90 photographs demonstrate Leuba's unique perspective, spanning reality and fantasy.
