This item was displayed in my home. It is a Iwami Kagura mask. The upper and lower jaws are separate. This mask is used in performances such as "Akukoden" and "Kurozuka," and it depicts the appearance of Tamamo-no-Mae (the nine-tailed fox) when she reveals her true nature. Iwami Kagura masks differ from other Kagura masks in that they are made by layering Sekishu washi paper many times. Therefore, compared to wooden masks, they are very lightweight, which is said to be a good match for the dynamic dancing of Iwami Kagura.
