This is likely an antique Italian doily. It's a lovely handmade piece, reversible and enjoyable on both sides, with a thread-like base in a square mesh. Lustrous linen thread is passed through, creating images of women in skirts, laughing men, and a land/meadow overflowing with flowers. In the center, four small flowers are hand-embroidered on an eight-petal linen fabric. The entire surrounding base is a khaki-greenish sand beige linen thread, knotted mesh… carefully secured stitch by stitch, woven in a grid pattern. It has a smooth, distinctly linen texture. Thick, ivory-colored linen thread, twisted into multiple strands, is draped across these squares, creating motifs of people… men and women gathered together, seemingly woven alternately. It's plump, moist, and smooth. Men and women gather intimately, raising their hands and embracing. It evokes a peaceful image of everyone dancing with smiles in a blooming land. It has a translucent quality that allows light to pass through, creating floating silhouettes.
