This is a kusazōshi (illustrated storybook) published in the late Edo period (Bunkyu 2, 1862). This book, which has survived for 160 years, shows overall signs of aging, with stains, wrinkles, and tears, and some parts of the text are faded, but its historical value is immeasurable. This long series of combined volumes, which continued to be published from the late Edo period to the first year of Meiji (1868), consists of 43 volumes and was written by four generations of authors. The first volume was created by Mizugaki Egao, followed by Ippitsuan (Keisai Eisen, a ukiyo-e artist), Ryukatei Taneharu, and Ryusuitei Taneharu. The illustrations were handled by seven ukiyo-e artists, including Utagawa Kunisada, and their artistic value is also high. The protagonist of the story is a gallant man named Jiraiya, who uses the magic of summoning toads (gama) and is active in various places. Also, a nemesis named Orochimaru appears, and Tsunade, who uses the magic of manipulating slugs and later becomes Jiraiya's wife, joins the story (the legendary Sannin), and the three-way standoff of toad, slug, and snake unfolds. It is said to be the model for the anime NARUTO. *Bonus: A modern Japanese translation is included. It consists of kana readings and modern Japanese translations, with some of my own commentary.
