When checking the infinity focus with a loupe on the film plane at the infinity position of the focus ring (a standard method for 4x5 photography), the focus is slightly short of infinity. In other words, even if the focus is at infinity in the viewfinder, the film will be focused slightly in front, resulting in out-of-focus images. Upon investigation, it seems the front lens element is extended by about 0.5mm to 1mm. However, this was checked at the maximum aperture, so if shooting at f/32, the depth of field might allow for proper focus. This needs to be confirmed by actual film photography. The focus ring is somewhat stiff, and sometimes the front lens element needs to be rotated for focusing. I applied grease, but it didn't lighten the feel. If it were made lighter, the focus would be extended further forward, increasing the out-of-focus effect on film. The shutter operates smoothly at all speeds. The lens has been disassembled and cleaned, so it's clean. However, when viewed with a penlight at the T setting, there are no mold, dust, or debris, but there are extremely small dot-like scratches? bubbles? visible, although it appears clear overall. This is likely due to the soft glass material used at the time, and is common with old lenses. The aperture blades are rust-free and move in a circular manner.
