Laos Ethnic Traditional Weaving - Pha Biang with Floating Weave - 12-2 This is a traditional Lao ethnic textile woven from silk and cotton. Lao women weave these by hand on looms using methods passed down through generations. Locally, it is said to be draped over the shoulders during formal occasions such as weddings and various celebrations. The weaving is very fine and beautiful, so it can be used as fabric for tapestries, table runners, etc. You can also repurpose it into cushion covers, fashion accessories, and other items. The threads are spun from cotton or cocoons, dyed with plant dyes, and woven by hand. I myself have experienced dyeing and spinning threads in the local area, and it was a time-consuming process with many steps. Also, unlike in Japan, they are sometimes made on the earthen floors or under the eaves of unpaved ground, so they may have mud splatters from squalls or rain. Please understand that the roughness is unique to the local area, as it is handmade. Washing may cause color fading or shrinkage, and the fabric and embroidery may deteriorate more quickly. It is best not to use detergent or hot water, but if you do wash it, please do so at your own risk regarding color fading and fabric deterioration.
