The combination of the inner vermilion lacquer and the amber wood grain creates a subdued aesthetic, but the interesting form gives it a Japanese modern feel. The inside is glossy, but when I touched it, I felt a slight roughness, so I examined it closely under light. There is a very faint mottled pattern, possibly from the wood's tannins. I only noticed this because I was inspecting it with a magnifying glass for the listing. You probably wouldn't notice it at all if you were just holding it. Please be aware of this. Like a wooden large bowl, it has a low center of gravity and a moist, substantial feel. Highly recommended for those looking for a unique vessel. ^_^
