The generally accepted explanation for this name is that pomegranates were mistaken for onions. The realistically depicted pomegranates on Chinese plates were faithfully imitated by Meissen in its early days. However, that was short-lived, and the unfamiliar fruit was transformed into the familiar onion, along with peach-like fruits and bamboo arranged in a balanced manner.
