【Daruma Paper Mache Mold】 Based on my research, this appears to be a Takasaki Daruma mold. The age seems to be around the early Showa era. I've handled Daruma molds before, but this one uses lacquer layered on the wooden mold as the base. Originally, without lacquer, paper mache would be layered onto the wooden base, and once the shape was mostly formed, an incision would be made from the back to remove the mold. However, upon close inspection after it arrived, I suspect that this one was finished as an object after its role as a paper mache mold was over, with layers of lacquer applied. The base is painted red, and finished with black roiro lacquer. It has aged considerably, with some paint peeling and the red undercoat partially exposed, giving off a considerable aura. However, like folk Buddhist items, Daruma molds are quite popular now, and prices have risen. I will offer this one at a price that is, at least, more affordable than the market average. This Daruma is approximately 14.5 cm tall, a decent size. The wood grain is nice, but this kind of glossy appearance is also good. This Daruma mold, modeled after the Zen monk Bodhidharma, is recommended.
