Arthur Foote was an American composer, organist, and pianist. He studied composition with John Knowles Paine at Harvard University, graduating in 1875 with the first Master of Music degree awarded in America. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Foote did not study in Europe, but rather pursued his musical education and career in America. His teacher, Paine, had studied in Berlin and became a professor when the first music department was established at Harvard University, so it was likely a good time for Foote. After graduation, Foote continued to compose while serving as a church organist in Boston for many years. His style is rooted in Romanticism, and he left behind high-quality chamber music. The "Three Short Pieces" were originally designed to be playable on both oboe and flute. Though short, they showcase Foote's sincere craftsmanship. The first piece, "Village Morning Song," masterfully captures the mood of villagers emerging from an ambiguous atmosphere that is neither strictly minor nor major. The harmonization in the trio section is also beautiful.
