This is a cotton kimono, "Mensauma" (綿薩摩), produced by "Togo Orimono" (東郷織物). Mensauma refers to cotton kasuri from Miyakonojo City (都城市), Miyazaki Prefecture, a famous production area. Despite being made of cotton, it has a smooth texture like silk, making it the highest quality among cotton fabrics. Togo Orimono is a textile workshop located in Miyakonojo City, Miyazaki Prefecture. It was founded in Miyakonojo in 1947 by Haruaki Togo, the third generation of Eion Nagae, who completed the shimeki (tie-dyeing machine) method, and Akio Nagae, the inventor of Satsuma kasuri. Akio Nagae was also selected as a Contemporary Master Craftsman, and Kunihiko Taniguchi is currently the representative. The novelist Saneatsu Mushanokoji, upon wearing a Mensauma made by Akio Nagae, was so impressed with the exquisite kimono that he sent Akio Nagae a letter of appreciation that read, "Satsuma Kasuri, Hand-woven Kasuri, Sincerity Beyond Compare, Saneatsu." Togo Orimono's cotton is said to be the highest quality cotton fabric. The beautiful and intricate pattern of 160-kikko kasuri (tortoise shell pattern) is woven from delicate threads unique to Satsuma kasuri.
