This is a kena from Kena Kobo Pino in Sayama City, Saitama Prefecture. The material is rare Houraichiku (golden bamboo), which has many fibers, resulting in a soft sound without harsh high notes. After 30 years of making kena, we have recently received requests from professional kena players such as Irichimontesinos and Daisuke Watanabe of MAYA. Features of Pino Kena: We employ a technique that no other Japanese kena maker has mastered: burning the bamboo all the way through. This was specially taught to us by craftsmen at a kena workshop in Peru. Burning the inside of the bamboo makes the pitch less likely to change over many years, and makes the kena durable, resistant to cracking and insect damage.
