This is an empty Yamanaka-nuri container that originally held Sumigen's tsukudani (preserved food). The Sumigen website (first image) mentions Yamanaka-nuri. The tsukudani is not included. The tsukudani came in a plastic bag, so there are no stains on the container. The container is unused. It would be great for chirashi sushi, holding sweets, or as a small item container! The main differences between synthetic lacquerware and lacquerware are the base material and the paint. Lacquerware uses natural wood as a base and natural lacquer as paint, while synthetic lacquerware uses plastic as a base and synthetic paints such as urethane. Therefore, natural lacquerware gains more character with use, while synthetic lacquerware is inexpensive, easy to handle, and can be mass-produced by machine.
